What to read

What can I read in the Bible when I feel anxious?

Four passages to read slowly when you feel anxious, with context and a simple way to reflect without forcing an instant feeling of peace.

The short answer

Try Psalm 23, Matthew 6:25–34, Philippians 4:4–9, or 1 Peter 5:6–7. Read more than one isolated line, notice who is speaking, and give yourself time to respond honestly. Scripture can be a source of comfort without requiring anxiety to disappear immediately.

Four places to begin

Psalm 23 uses the image of a shepherd through both rest and danger. Matthew 6:25–34 is part of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount; read the whole section to hear his teaching about worry in its setting. Philippians 4:4–9 joins prayer and thanksgiving with attention to what is good. First Peter 5:6–7 invites readers to bring their cares to God.

These passages speak differently. You may connect with one more than another today. Read the whole paragraph, then choose a phrase to return to without treating it as a formula.

A simple way to read when your mind is racing

Begin with one passage, not a long list. Read it once to hear the words, and again to notice the speaker, the audience, and any promise or instruction. You might write down what worries you and one question the passage raises. You do not have to produce a cheerful answer.

If a verse feels like it blames you for being anxious, look at the surrounding chapter and talk it through with someone you trust. A short excerpt can sound harsher when it is separated from the larger conversation.

Can Scripture sit alongside other support?

Yes. Reading and prayer can be part of how you seek comfort, while a trusted person or qualified professional can help with the practical and emotional weight you are carrying. Seeking help does not mean your reading has failed.
