The short answer
Search the distinctive words you remember, then try a shorter phrase or a synonym if nothing appears. Bible translations use different wording, so a verse may exist even when your exact phrase does not match. Once you find a likely result, open its chapter to check the context.
Start with the most distinctive words
A search for “peace” may return many results; “peace that passes understanding” is more specific. If you remember only the idea, search a few related words separately. A line you heard in a sermon may be a paraphrase, not an exact quotation from the edition you use.
Keep your first search short. If it fails, remove common words such as “the” or “and,” then try the key noun or verb. Do not assume the first result is correct simply because it sounds familiar.
What if I know the book or a partial reference?
If you remember “John 3,” open that chapter and scan the surrounding verses. If you know only a book, search within it when your reader supports that, or browse the chapter list. A reference identifies a place; the wording still depends on the selected edition.

Check the result before sharing it
Open the full chapter and read the paragraph around the match. Confirm the book, chapter, verse, and edition, especially if you plan to quote it publicly. Some phrases are repeated across Scripture; others are commonly misquoted or attributed to the wrong place.
